Tips, FAQs and support for better surveys
Create surveys
Design the questions, logic and layout of your survey exactly the way you want.
You have three options for creating your survey: you can create a survey with AI, use a template, or start with a blank survey.
The easiest option is to start with AI. Briefly describe what your survey should be about, and empirio.ai will automatically create a complete survey for you. You can then adapt it in the editor.
Alternatively, you can select a ready-made template and use it as the basis for your own survey. This is particularly helpful if you want to get started quickly or are looking for inspiration for suitable questions.
If you already know exactly how your survey should be structured, you can also start with a blank survey and define all questions, answer options, logic and design settings yourself.
All three routes lead to the same editor. There you can continue to edit, design and publish your survey at any time.
You briefly describe what it should be about. For example: “Employee survey on the topic of working from home, focusing on satisfaction and suggestions for improvement.” The more specific you are, the better the result.
The AI then creates a complete questionnaire from this, with suitable question types, a logical order, and both a welcome and a closing page. You can then adapt the draft in the editor, add to it, or remove questions.
If you really don’t like the result, simply generate it again. It doesn’t cost anything.
You can get started directly on the homepage or via the dashboard under “Create survey”, where you can select the AI option.
Three things help:
*Describe your goal: What do you want to know in the end?
*Name your target group: employees, customers, students, club members?
*Give the context: Is it a one-off survey, feedback after an event, an academic study?
The more context you provide, the more precisely the AI can build the questionnaire. “Survey about the summer party” works. “Survey for our club’s summer party to ask about preferred dates, food preferences and willingness to help” works better.
This information is stored in the survey and can be updated at any time in the editor via the AI assistant under “Customise AI”.
Yes. You can have the AI create initial surveys for you on empirio.ai even without registering. Simply go to our homepage and enter a few details about the survey. The AI will then generate an initial questionnaire, which you can easily customise (design, type of survey, etc.). You can repeat this process as often as you like until you are happy with the survey.
However, as soon as you want to adapt the questionnaire in our editor (add questions, delete content, etc.) or actually send it out, registration is required. Our survey tool saves the survey you have created straight away, so you don’t have to start from scratch after registering.
So yes, you can create an online survey with empirio.ai free of charge and without registering. But as soon as you want to use the survey in practice, registration is required.
No. Creating a survey with empirio.ai is completely free of charge. You can create as many surveys as you like, include as many questions as you want, and fine-tune your questionnaire for as long as it takes until you’re happy with it.
In some places you’ll find premium features that let you further optimise your survey. You can also try these out freely in the editor – they’re clearly marked as premium. You only incur costs once you want to publish a survey that contains active premium elements. For that, you’ll need a suitable package.
Prefer to stick with the free version? No problem. Premium features can be deactivated again with a single click – and your survey will go online as normal, free of charge.
empirio.ai offers all the question types you need for a modern survey – from single choice and multiple choice to scales, NPS questions, matrix questions, star ratings, open text questions, and even date and file upload questions.
Which type fits when? Rule of thumb: if you want clear, comparable answers, use closed questions (single/multiple choice, scale). If you want genuine opinions and unexpected insights, include open text questions. A mix usually works best.
In the editor you can add questions with a single click, move them via drag and drop, duplicate or delete them. All changes are saved automatically – you don’t have to worry about a thing.
If you delete a question by mistake, you can undo the last step.
To enable the AI assistant to make the best possible suggestions in the editor, you should – in addition to the initial prompt at the beginning – gradually upload further information about the survey: Who is your target group? How should the questions be phrased? etc. This helps the AI assistant to understand your survey project better and better and to make improved suggestions.
These are exactly the kinds of cases where AI comes in. Simply tell the AI assistant what you want done and it will get to work. Before any changes are applied, you can review them and specify which ones should be carried out and which should not.
Example: Do you want to change all questions from the formal “Sie” to the informal “du” in the form of address? Do you want to add “No answer” as a response option to all questions? The AI assistant supports you precisely with these tasks and carries out such changes in seconds.
Yes. For each question you can set whether answering it is mandatory or optional. Mandatory questions are clearly marked for your respondents so they know where they can’t move on without answering. To do this, go to the editor on the right-hand side and click the “cogwheel” for the relevant question. A dialogue will open where you can define the question as mandatory.
Tip: Don’t make all questions mandatory. This noticeably reduces the dropout rate.
Yes. You can insert images directly into answer options – for example, to compare products, designs or logos. It’s also possible to include images in short descriptive texts between the questions. All common formats are supported. When uploading, pay attention to any restrictions on file size. Videos cannot be uploaded at the moment.
Of particular interest for companies: you can also always upload a logo so that the survey reflects the company’s corporate design as closely as possible (together with the questionnaire’s colour settings).
Yes, that’s called logic. You can specify that certain questions are only shown if a particular answer was given beforehand. That way, your respondents only see what’s relevant to them – which makes the survey shorter, more focused and more pleasant.
Example: Anyone who states in the first question that they don’t own a car won’t receive any follow-up questions about car brands.
Yes. The order of the answer options can be randomised – in other words, shown in different sequences for different participants. This is particularly important for scientific surveys because it avoids order effects and improves data quality.
We have lots of modern design templates that look great right from the start. You can easily customise them in the survey editor at the touch of a button. You can then also make the following adjustments:
*Adjust colours – to match your corporate design or simply however you like them.
*Add your logo – visible on every survey page.
All designs are automatically responsive. That means your survey works on desktop, tablet and smartphone without you having to do anything.
Yes. You can create multiple language versions for each survey. Your respondents then choose for themselves at the start in which language they would like to take part. You can set this option under "Settings".
If you wish, AI can help you translate directly: you click on "Translate" and receive an initial draft in the desired language, which you can then review and refine. Any changes to the questionnaire are always applied automatically in all languages. This means: change it once and all language versions are updated.
Yes. For every survey on empirio.ai you can create a welcome page and an end page – and you can design both exactly as you like.
On the welcome page you introduce your participants: What is it about? How long will the survey take? Are the answers anonymous? A good introduction leads to more participation and fewer dropouts.
On the end page you say goodbye. A simple “Thank you” always works – but you can also add further links, point to a prize draw or invite people straight to the next activity.
Both pages support text, headings and (on the end page) links. If you prefer to keep things simple, you can deactivate the welcome page and just leave the end page as it is – that works too.
