Create & analyse surveys with ChatGPT: here's how

Create a survey with ChatGPT: the prompts that produce usable questions, which ChatGPT account the survey-tool connection needs and what works without one.

You want to run a survey and ChatGPT is already open. The questions are ready in two minutes, and then what? A link you can actually send out is the one thing the chat will not hand over.

You create a survey with ChatGPT in two steps: you let ChatGPT write the questionnaire, then you move it into a survey tool that produces the participation link and stores the responses. With your own MCP connector, ChatGPT handles that second step as well. At empirio.ai, an online survey tool from Germany, the MCP server for AI agents is free. By the end you will have the prompts that produce usable questions and you will know which ChatGPT account the connection needs.

📌 The key points at a glance

  • ChatGPT writes questionnaires but collects no responses.
  • An MCP connector lets ChatGPT work inside empirio.ai directly.
  • ChatGPT offers custom MCP connectors only on Business and Enterprise.
  • The empirio.ai MCP server is free.
  • Without a connector, the empirio.ai AI writes the questionnaire.

What can ChatGPT really do for surveys and what can it not do?

ChatGPT is a language model, not a survey tool. For everything that happens before the fieldwork, ChatGPT is strong: sharpening the goal, phrasing questions, suggesting scales, proofreading wording. For everything that comes after, ChatGPT has no basis, because a language model cannot receive and cannot store responses from other people.

The split between writing and collecting is why one chat feels like a finished survey and the next one runs into a dead end. The table shows where the line sits and what a connection to empirio.ai changes about it.

If you paste an existing results file into the chat, ChatGPT summarises it and points out anything unusual. That is text work on data which has already been collected, not the collecting itself. So for a methodologically sound analysis of a questionnaire, a summary in the chat is not enough.

ChatGPT writes the questionnaire. The survey tool always collects the responses.

Writing a questionnaire with ChatGPT: four prompts that make a difference

The quality of the questions depends almost entirely on the prompt. A line like “make me a customer satisfaction survey” produces ten arbitrary questions that you then have to rework one by one. Four details change that: the occasion, the target group, the time it should take and the decision you want the results to inform.

The four prompts below run one after another in the same chat. Each prompt builds on the result of the previous one, so it pays not to squeeze everything into a single instruction.

  1. Name the occasion and the target group. The more concrete the context, the less rework is left: “I run a small café with 20 seats in Bristol and want to find out why regulars are coming in less often. Write 10 questions for an online survey, target group 25 to 60 years old, under 3 minutes to complete.”
  2. Ask for a mix of question types. Ask ChatGPT for eight closed and two open questions. Closed questions can be counted, open ones explain the numbers. With this mix you use the two basic forms among the survey question types.
  3. Have it check for leading questions. The second pass goes like this: “Flag every question that suggests an answer, is ambiguous or asks two things at once, and rewrite it neutrally.” ChatGPT reliably finds its own wording that turned out too friendly.
  4. Have the scales spelled out. A scale from 1 to 5 without labels means something different to every respondent. Have the points named, for example from “very dissatisfied” to “very satisfied”. That gives you a labelled scale of the kind you know from the Likert scale.

Tip

At the end, ask ChatGPT to justify the order of the questions. The answer immediately shows whether a sensitive question comes too early or demographics sit ahead of the actual topic. Both lower the completion rate and both are easy to miss when you read a questionnaire silently.

Checklist before you take the questionnaire over

ChatGPT knows your project only from the prompt. One last pass is worth it, then, before the questions move into a survey tool. The five points below cover the mistakes that slip through most often in AI-generated questionnaires, above all invented answer options and questions that ask two things at once.

  • Every question feeds into a decision.
  • No question asks two things at once.
  • All scale points are labelled.
  • The answer options are complete and do not overlap.
  • Demographic questions sit at the end.

ChatGPT as a survey tool: the connection over MCP

ChatGPT can take on the second step, creating the real survey. What makes that possible is MCP, the Model Context Protocol: an open interface through which an AI chat carries out actions in another service. Once the empirio.ai MCP server is set up in ChatGPT, ChatGPT creates surveys in your account, edits them, publishes them and retrieves the responses.

In practice that means you write “Create an anonymous survey with 6 questions about the last release, scale 1 to 5 plus one open question, and publish it” and get the participation link back. A few days later you ask in the same chat for the lowest scores. This is made possible by the empirio.ai MCP server, which turns your instruction in the chat into real steps in your survey account.

  1. Create an account. Signing up with empirio.ai is free, and 50 participants a month are part of the free plan.
  2. Add the server address. In ChatGPT on the web you add empirio.ai as a custom connector. The address is https://platform.empirio.ai/mcp.
  3. Sign in and grant permissions. The first time you connect, you sign in once and grant only the permissions you want to allow. Access can be withdrawn again at any time.
  4. Start with a test survey. Let ChatGPT create a short survey and see how it looks in the empirio.ai dashboard.

Because the interfaces of the AI providers change fairly often, empirio.ai keeps the exact steps up to date in the developer documentation. The same route works with any MCP-capable client, for example with surveys in Claude.

Which ChatGPT account do you need for the connector?

Not every ChatGPT account can add a custom MCP connector, and that is exactly what most guides leave out. According to the OpenAI help article, apps, full MCP support and developer mode are available in ChatGPT on the web for Business as well as Enterprise and Edu. Write actions run there as a beta.

The split by account type hits exactly the actions that surveys are about. Creating, editing or publishing a survey are write actions. A Pro account may therefore read the empirio.ai MCP server but cannot create a survey in your account. OpenAI sets out the requirements and the route through developer mode in the help article on Developer mode and MCP apps in ChatGPT. In a Business or Enterprise workspace, an administrator also has to enable developer mode, so you cannot switch it on by yourself.

Without a connector: from the ChatGPT draft to a finished survey

If your ChatGPT account does not allow a custom connector, the route stays short anyway: you take the questions out of the chat and move them into a survey tool. The detour through ChatGPT can just as easily be skipped, because at empirio.ai the AI writes the questionnaire for free. You describe your project in one sentence and get a complete questionnaire that you then refine in the draft.

The difference to the chat is that the result is a real survey straight away. You can create an online survey for free there, send the link out and watch the responses come in. The analysis tools and the results as charts are part of the free plan, as is exporting the questionnaire as Word and PDF, in case a supervisor or a line manager wants to see it first.

Two limits of empirio.ai belong openly on the table. Analysing free-text answers with AI and having the AI summarise results are part of the Plus plan, as are cross-tabulations and filters. And for a panel study with quota control, empirio.ai is not the right tool. For a survey in a team, in a club, on a course or for a dissertation, the free plan is usually enough.

Data protection: what ChatGPT may see of your responses

The decision that falls before the first prompt is this: may ChatGPT see your participants' answers? As long as the data sits in the survey tool, that provider's rules apply. At empirio.ai, EU hosting is part of the free plan and so is the data processing agreement. We show you in a separate post how empirio.ai, as a European survey tool, runs its AI features in the EU as well. As soon as results move into the chat or a connector is granted read access, the rules of OpenAI apply on top.

As soon as a company, a club, a university or a public body stands behind the survey, personal data is processed on its behalf, and that requires a contract with the tool provider. In the United Kingdom that duty follows from Article 28 of the UK GDPR, and the ICO is the supervisory authority. Purely private surveys among family and friends fall outside it. Whether your case is covered is decided by the data protection officer in your organisation, or by your supervisor in the case of a dissertation. These rules on data protection in surveys apply whatever tool you use, and with a genuinely anonymous survey much of the personal data never arises in the first place.

Careful

Raw data with free-text answers does not belong in an open chat history, because open answers regularly contain names, departments and reasons for sick leave. Have only the counted values per question analysed instead, or stay in the survey tool for the analysis, where the data already sits.

In its help article on custom connectors, OpenAI points out explicitly that connecting to unsafe or untrusted MCP servers increases the security risk, prompt injection included. A plain rule follows from that: only connect services where you hold an account yourself and know who runs them, and give every connector only the permissions it needs for its job.

Common mistakes in surveys written with ChatGPT

The four mistakes below turn up particularly often in AI-assisted questionnaires. They happen not out of carelessness but because a language model produces plausible-sounding questions faster than a person can check them.

All four can be fixed in a few minutes. What matters is that you read the questionnaire once as a participant and not as the person commissioning it.

Taking the questionnaire over unchecked

ChatGPT has very broad general knowledge but is not specialised in surveys. Typical problems are invented answer options that do not match your organisation, and questions about things your participants cannot judge at all. The result is answers nobody can do anything with. So read the questionnaire through once in full and delete every question whose result leads to no decision.

Letting the question count grow

Asked for a survey, ChatGPT will happily deliver twenty questions, because more volume looks like more effort. Every extra question costs completions, though, and a questionnaire nobody finishes delivers no data. Name the number in the prompt and have ChatGPT cut things back instead of taking in every idea. Ten to twelve questions are the upper limit for most projects.

Trusting the analysis in the chat without checking

When ChatGPT summarises a results table, it names averages, shares and trends in one fluent paragraph. Those numbers are often right, but not always. Above all, the figure they rest on is missing. Check at least one number against the analysis in the survey tool before it travels into a presentation or a dissertation.

Passing on results without the response count

A line like “80 per cent are satisfied” sounds solid and means four people out of five responses. ChatGPT produces sentences like that on request without naming the base. So always write the number of responses alongside, with every single figure. Otherwise a random fluctuation ends up in the minutes as a finding.

Conclusion

ChatGPT is the fastest route to good questions and the longest route to a finished survey. Anyone who writes the questionnaire in the chat and then publishes it in a survey tool has a clean survey in twenty minutes. The connector saves another few minutes on top of that but requires a Business or Enterprise account with ChatGPT. If you do not have one, you lose nothing: the empirio.ai AI writes the questionnaire for free and saves the detour through the chat.

Frequently asked questions

ChatGPT writes the questionnaire but not a survey people can fill in. A language model cannot produce a participation link and cannot store responses from other people. For the fieldwork itself you move the questions into a survey tool or connect ChatGPT to your survey account over an MCP connector (as of October 2026).

A usable prompt for ChatGPT names four things: the occasion for the survey, the target group with an age range, how long it should take to complete and the decision you want the results to inform. A second prompt then asks it to flag leading questions and rewrite them neutrally.

Custom MCP connectors are available in ChatGPT on the web for Business as well as Enterprise and Edu, with write actions there as a beta. A Pro account may connect custom MCP servers for read and fetch only. The OpenAI help article does not name Free or Plus, and the mobile app has no such feature (as of October 2026).

ChatGPT needs write permissions on your surveys to create and publish them, plus read permissions on the responses for the analysis. Both are granted separately the first time you connect and can be withdrawn again at any time. For writing a questionnaire alone, the survey permissions are enough.

ChatGPT analyses the results it is given: as a pasted table, as an uploaded file or over an MCP connector with read permissions. ChatGPT then summarises the answers per question and points out anything unusual. Check at least one number in the survey tool before you pass the summary on.

ChatGPT often phrases questions too warmly and so suggests an answer, especially with questions about satisfaction. A second pass helps, with the instruction to flag every question that suggests an answer, is ambiguous or asks two things at once, and to rewrite it neutrally.

Survey data sits on servers in the EU at empirio.ai, and EU hosting plus the data processing agreement are part of the free plan. As soon as results are handed to ChatGPT, the rules of OpenAI apply on top. Raw data with free-text answers therefore does not belong in an open chat history (as of October 2026).
