How to use a QR code for your survey

A QR code is the shortest path from the physical world into your survey: on a table stand in a restaurant, on the last slide of a talk, on a handout after an event, or on a receipt. People point a camera at it and land in the survey — without typing an address.

What to watch when printing

Allow at least two centimetres of edge length for a printed code, and considerably more on a poster — a rule of thumb is a tenth of the reading distance. Leave a light quiet zone of at least four module widths all around, or the camera will not find the code. A dark code on a light background is the most reliable combination; the inverse is not recognised by some scanners at all. And test the finished print with two or three different phones before you order a run.

Does the code stay valid?

The QR code contains exactly the address you enter — it does not route through an intermediary. As long as that address is reachable, the code works. That is an advantage over short-URL services, whose failure would break every printed code at once, and equally the reason to settle the link before you print.

Common questions

Is the QR code generator free?

Yes. You can create QR codes and download them as PNGs without a sign-up and at no cost — commercial use included.

What can I store in a QR code?

Anything that can be written as text: survey links and other URLs, email addresses, phone numbers or arbitrary text.

Are my inputs transmitted anywhere?

No. The code is generated entirely in your browser. Neither the link nor the image leaves your device.

Do the QR codes stay valid?

The code points directly at the address you entered. As long as that stays reachable, so does the code — there is no intermediary service that could go away.
